I woke up because someone was shaking me. I sat up in bed feeling alarmed. It couldn’t be the Sheep. Stertorous breathing was coming from the next bed. She was in the lap of Morpheus.

“Caro!” Janice’s voice hissed urgently. “Crikey, I thought you would never wake up!”

“Janice!” I whispered anxiously. “What are you doing here? What’s happening? What’s wrong?”

In the moonlight that filtered through the thin curtains, I could make out the shape of her, sitting on the end of my bed.

“I’ve come to say cheerio,” she said in a low voice. “Sorry I had to wake you to do it. The thing is, I’ve decided to take off. Now. Tonight.”

“Take off… tonight?” I whispered, not quite taking it in. “What do you mean? You can’t mean you’re leaving? Not now! Not in the middle of the night!”

“Just watch me.” In the gloom her face shone like a death’s head. “I’m doing a moonlight. I’ve had plenty of practice. I skipped twice from prep school and once from Roedean. I know it’s a surprise, but that’s how it is.”

“I’m not surprised,” I heaved myself into a sitting position. This was true. After all I had experienced at the training centre there wasn’t an ounce of surprise left in my body.

“The rotten dog,” Janice said bitterly. “I never thought he’d do this.”

“He probably acted with the best of intentions,” I said. “He was just trying to make it easier for you. Running away won’t solve anything.”

“Staying won’t either,” she said.“I don’t want to be a paying pupil, Caro. I wouldn’t fit in. I was happy as I was. He promised not to interfere, and he shouldn’t have. He had no right.”

“But Janice, he loves you,” I said. “You can’t blame him for that. He wants you to be secure. He wants you to be safe. He doesn’t know anything about the life you want to lead; it’s outside his experience. He only sees the dangers waiting round every corner.” For a moment, drink, drugs and young girls pulled out of the Thames filled my imagination. I grabbed her arm. “I’m not going to let you go,” I said. “I’m going to wake the others!”

“Caro,” Janice said with deadly earnestness, “if you make a sound, I’ll knock you out cold with the lamp.”

“Janice!” I stared at her, appalled.

She shrugged. “There’s nothing you can do to stop me. I’ve made up my mind. If I’d known you were going to be awkward, I wouldn’t have bothered waking you.”

“But what will you do?” I asked her. “Where will you go?”

She got up from the bed, moving quietly so as not to wake the Sheep. “I’ll go to me old Gran first. Then I’ll find a new place to train.”

“Make sure it’s a good place,” I said. “Don’t let them exploit you.”

“As if I would!”

“How will you get to London?”

“I’ll thumb it. There’ll be plenty of traffic once I get to the main road.” She was at the door now. “Cheerio, Caro. I hope you get the scholarship.
